EMC just announced general availability of their all-flash disk array leveraging the XtremIO technology they acquired about 18 months ago. While not first-to-market in this category, EMC’s XtremIO platform separates itself from other all-flash offerings with a scale-out architecture, offering a full suite of features including inline de-duplication and thin provisioning for storage efficiency, a new data protection algorithm different from traditional HW based RAID, integration with the latest virtualization hyper-visors, and data storage algorithms tailored to the unique behavior of SSD’s versus spinning disks. With EMC’s strong market presence, this technology should be very well received.
